My ipod touch wont turn off right?!?

I got this message in itunes when I tried to sync it that says something like it cant sync cause my ipod cant start a session so I tried turning it off an now it on with a lit up black screen with a little spinning white thing an its been doing that for about ten mintues an I tried plugging it in to my computer but I dont know what to do :/
