How can i improve for cross country?

So pretty much, i am super pissed right now. I didn't do spring track, not saying why, but i didn't do it. But i still ran. I just focoused on building up a big base, which i did. Now real summer xc training started with the team. There are some kids who barley have ran before, a fe kids who havent ran in months, and there beating me. I know its not a race but i am giving it almost 100 % and there going like at a moderate pace. I am frustrated because i felt like the whole base i built was a waste of time. I dont think i am burning out because i took a few weeks off between. And it's not that i my pace isnt even that slow, i guess there jsut going really fast. I was thinking about doing double sessions 2 times a week for the first 4 weeks, then doubles 3 times a week the last 4 weeks. I am only going to be a sophmore, do you think i am to young? When real practices start we do doubles almost everyday for a about 2 weeks. I really just want to havea great season, but i feel awful. My legs are tight when i am not running but they feel pretty normal when i a, it's weird. So i know i wrote alot, but please help me out!
